# IoT with Arduino Cloud: Beginner-Friendly Workshop

Join us for a 2-hour, hands-on workshop that introduces you to the Internet of Things (IoT) using Arduino Cloud. This beginner-friendly session will show you how to connect a device to WiFi, visualise sensor data in real time, and manage your device remotely.

## Arduino Cloud
[Arduino Cloud](https://cloud.arduino.cc/) is an online platform for connecting compatible boards to the Internet, building dashboards, and viewing your sensor data from anywhere. You’ll use it to get an ESP32 online and streaming live environmental readings.

## What You’ll Learn
During the workshop, you’ll solder, wire, and program sensors on an ESP32. You’ll connect your device to Arduino Cloud, set up a simple dashboard, and monitor temperature, humidity, and air pressure online. You’ll also display readings locally on a small screen.

## Materials
You’ll work with:
- Two ESP32 boards
- A BME280 sensor for temperature, humidity, and air pressure
- A small screen to display data locally

## Requirements
- A laptop
- Install the [Arduino Cloud Agent](https://cloud.arduino.cc/download-agent/)
- A USB-C data cable (limited number available to buy on the day)
- No previous experience required, beginner-friendly

## Materials Costs
It costs **€25** for a kit to take home.

## Instructions
[Link to slides](https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1wtO9P6p4a-CL3omzcWdf-vDEWegklzHMaalzUt9Qii8/edit?usp=sharing)

## Facilitator
Taught by [Jeffrey Roe](https://chaos.social/@tdr112).

**Buy a kit at the Hardware Hacking Area to guarantee a seat, or come by early. Please do arrive early, regardless.**
",

I spend a lot of my free time at [TOG Hackerspace](https://www.tog.ie/) in Dublin, building practical things with electronics, sensors, radio, and a bit of nonsense when appropriate.

At 39C3 I’ll be hanging around the [Hardware Hacking Area](/congress/2025/hub/en/assembly/detail/hardwarehackingarea), running a few hands-on workshops:

- [Build Your Own Satellite Ground Station (TinyGS)](/congress/2025/hub/en/event/detail/build-your-own-satellite-ground-station)
- [IoT with Arduino Cloud, beginner-friendly](/congress/2025/hub/en/event/detail/iot-with-arduino-cloud-beginner-friendly-workshop)
- [Build Your Own Air Quality Sensor (Sensor.Community)](/congress/2025/hub/en/event/detail/build-your-own-air-quality-sensor)

When I’m not teaching, you’ll probably find me with the [Irish Embassy](/congress/2025/hub/en/assembly/detail/irish), a loose collective of Ireland-connected folks who pool resources and create a shared base at events. Not government-related, mostly power adaptors and cups of tea.

## Interests
- Hardware hacking, sensors, and IoT
- LoRa, community radio projects, and practical antenna builds
- Amateur radio and radio experiments, callsign EI7IRB
- Citizen science, environmental monitoring, and open data
- Repair culture, fixability, and keeping good gear out of the bin
- Workshops that get people building within the first 10 minutes

## Contact
Mastodon: [@tdr112@chaos.social](https://chaos.social/@tdr112)
",
